AWS vs Azure vs Google Cloud Certification (2026): The Honest Guide That Makes the Decision for You

There are over 750,000 open cloud computing roles in the US right now. AWS-tagged jobs outnumber Azure jobs roughly 2:1. But Azure-certified professionals in India earn more per year in MNC environments than AWS-certified professionals at the same experience level.

That single data conflict is why this decision is harder than most articles admit — and why “it depends on your goals” is the laziest possible answer.

So I’m not going to say that. I’m going to give you an actual recommendation, based on your actual situation, with the numbers to back it up. By the end of this, you will know which cert to register for.

Let’s go.

The 2026 Market Reality in One Table

Before anything else, you need to understand what you’re choosing between. Not philosophically. Numerically.

FactorAWSMicrosoft AzureGoogle Cloud (GCP)
Global market share (Q1 2026)~31%~21%~13%
YoY growth rate~17%~39%~32%
LinkedIn job postings (US, Jan 2026)Highest (~2× Azure)StrongLower, niche-focused
Avg. salary — associate level (US)$120K–$160K$130K–$160K$140K–$190K
Avg. salary — professional level (US)$150K–$200K+$145K–$165K$170K–$207K
India entry-level (MNC, 0–2 yrs)₹5–₹9 LPA₹6–₹10 LPA₹7–₹12 LPA
Cert renewal period3 years1 year (free online)2 years (Associate), 2 years (Pro)
Foundational cert cost$100$99$99
Associate cert cost$150$165$125
Professional cert cost$300$165$200

Salary figures reflect actual role compensation, not what a single foundational cert earns you. Entry-level figures assume 0–2 years experience with the associated certification.

Three things jump out of that table immediately. AWS has the most jobs. Azure is growing faster than AWS in enterprise environments. And GCP pays the highest — but only at the professional level, in specialised data and AI roles.

That gap in context is why most people make the wrong choice.

AWS vs Azure vs Google Cloud

Who Each Platform Is Actually Built For

AWS — Built for Builders, Startups, and Generalists

Amazon invented cloud computing as a commercial service. That heritage shows. AWS has more services, more regions, more third-party integrations, and more training resources than anyone else. If you are starting from zero and want the widest possible job net, AWS is the answer.

It is not the answer because it is “best.” It is the answer because more companies run on AWS than any other cloud, which means more job postings, more teams you can join, and more career pivots available to you later.

The catch: the AWS exam environment is demanding. The Solutions Architect – Associate (SAA-C03) is widely considered the hardest associate-level exam across all three platforms. People who underestimate it fail. Budget 3–5 months of consistent prep if you’re starting with limited IT background.

Azure — Built for Enterprise, Government, and the Microsoft World

If you are working in — or targeting — a corporate IT department, a bank, a hospital, a government agency, or any company that runs Windows Server and Microsoft 365, Azure is where you belong.

Azure’s growth numbers tell this story: 39% year-over-year, driven almost entirely by enterprises deepening their Microsoft dependency. These organisations were already paying for Microsoft licences. Moving to Azure was the logical next step, and Azure made it seamlessly easy.

For Indian professionals specifically: the majority of large MNCs with offices in Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune, and Chennai run Azure-heavy environments. An AZ-104 Azure Administrator cert is the single most frequently requested cloud credential in Indian MNC job descriptions. I have looked at hundreds of them. This is not an opinion — it’s pattern recognition.

GCP — Built for Data Scientists, AI Engineers, and Kubernetes Teams

Google Cloud is the specialist’s platform. It does not try to match AWS service-for-service. Instead, it excels in a specific cluster of things: BigQuery (analytics at scale), Vertex AI (ML deployment), Kubernetes (GCP invented it), and raw computing performance for AI workloads.

The salary numbers at the professional level reflect this specialisation. A Google Cloud Professional Data Engineer or Professional Cloud Architect commands some of the highest salaries in the entire IT certification world — $190K–$207K at the professional level.

But here is the honest caveat: those salaries go to people with deep data engineering or ML experience who added GCP expertise on top. A junior with only a GCP cert will find fewer job postings and a steeper initial climb than their AWS or Azure counterparts.

GCP is a power move. Not a starting move.

My honest take: Start with CLF-C02 only if you genuinely have no IT background. If you have any technical experience, skip it and go straight to SAA-C03. The Cloud Practitioner does not impress hiring managers — the Solutions Architect does.

Notable: Azure’s expert-level exams cost $165 — the same as associate-level. AWS charges $300 for professional/specialty. That is a meaningful difference if you are planning a multi-cert path.

Also notable: Azure renews every 1 year, but the renewal is a free, online, open-book assessment with unlimited retakes. This is actually easier than it sounds and keeps your cert signals fresh on LinkedIn.

Google Cloud (GCP) Certification Path

Honest note on the Cloud Digital Leader: Some salary comparison sites show this cert associated with very high average salaries ($174K+). This is statistical noise — it reflects the fact that senior professionals with already-high salaries occasionally add this foundational badge. The cert itself does not command that salary. Do not make a career decision based on that number.

The Decision Framework: Which Platform for Which Person

If you have no IT background and want the fastest path to a first cloud job:

Start with AWS. Earn the Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02) first, then commit immediately to the Solutions Architect – Associate. The AWS ecosystem has the most beginner learning resources, the largest community, and the most entry-level job postings globally.

If you are an IT professional already working in a Microsoft environment:

Go straight to AZ-104 Azure Administrator. Skip AZ-900 unless your company requires it for internal tracking. You already know Active Directory, Windows Server, and Microsoft 365. Azure is your natural extension. The enterprise job market for AZ-104-certified administrators is strong and less oversaturated than AWS.

If your goal is data engineering, analytics, or machine learning:

Build toward GCP Professional Data Engineer or Professional ML Engineer. Start with the Associate Cloud Engineer to learn GCP fundamentals, then move directly to the professional cert in your specialty. BigQuery and Vertex AI are genuinely best-in-class tools. Employers know this.

If you are an Indian professional targeting MNC roles in Bangalore, Hyderabad, or Pune:

Get AZ-104 first. Then add AWS Solutions Architect – Associate. This dual-cert combination is what the majority of mid-to-senior cloud job descriptions in Indian MNCs actually ask for. One cert signals competence. Two certs across different platforms signals seniority and cloud agnosticism — exactly what IT departments managing hybrid cloud environments want to hire.

If you are a developer or DevOps engineer:

AWS DVA-C02 or DOP-C02 for broad cloud-native environments and startups. AZ-400 for Microsoft-stack DevOps. GCP Cloud DevOps Engineer for Kubernetes-heavy organisations. Pick based on where your target companies sit, not on which certification sounds most prestigious.

Cert Renewal: What Nobody Tells You Upfront

The renewal cycle matters more than most beginners realise — because it determines your ongoing cost of staying certified.

ProviderCert ValidityRenewal MethodRenewal Cost
AWS3 yearsRetake exam or pass higher-level cert$150–$300 (or free with select vouchers)
Azure1 year (role-based)Free online assessment, unlimited retakesFree
GCP2 yearsRetake exam at discounted rate~$100 (with 50% voucher)

Azure’s 1-year cycle sounds punishing. In practice, it is an advantage. The free annual online renewal keeps your knowledge current, which matters in a field that changes as fast as cloud computing does. It also means your LinkedIn cert badge is always recently dated — a signal that recruiter tools actually look for.

If you are planning a 3–5 year certification career, factor these renewal costs into your budget. Three AWS professional-level recertifications over a decade cost as much as some university courses.

What the Big Career Sites Won’t Tell You

Most cloud cert comparison articles stop at “here are the certifications, here are the salaries, good luck.” Here is what they leave out.

1. The AWS “halo effect” in Indian MNC interviews is real — and wearing off.

Until 2022, having any AWS certification was enough to get through a first-round screening call for cloud roles in Indian MNCs. That halo has faded. AWS certs are now so common that they do not differentiate candidates the way they once did. Azure AZ-104 and AZ-500 are currently better differentiators in the Indian enterprise market because the supply of genuinely experienced Azure administrators has not caught up with demand. If you want to stand out in Bangalore or Hyderabad in 2026, Azure is a smarter first move than AWS was three years ago.

2. The “free tier” projects strategy is the only thing that separates candidates who get interviews from candidates who get offers.

Certification gets your resume shortlisted. Projects get you hired. AWS, Azure, and GCP all offer free-tier access that you can use to build real projects at zero cost. A GitHub repository with a deployed serverless application on AWS Lambda, or a working Power BI dashboard connected to Azure SQL, or a BigQuery analytics pipeline pulling public dataset results — any of these is worth more in a technical interview than the certification itself. Hiring managers are sophisticated enough to know that passing a multiple-choice exam and actually doing cloud engineering are two different things. Your project portfolio bridges that gap.

3. “Exam dumps” will get you the certification and cost you the job.

There is a significant market for exam question dumps — leaked or reconstructed test questions that circulate in WhatsApp groups and Telegram channels, especially in India. Using them to pass an exam produces something genuinely dangerous: a certificate that signals competence you don’t have. Technical interviews at serious companies probe whether you understand why an architecture decision is correct, not just which answer to select. A candidate who passed on dumps often fails this probing instantly. The certification becomes a liability rather than an asset because it raises expectations the candidate cannot meet. Study the actual material. Use official practice exams. It takes longer. It is the only version that works.

The Two-Cert Stack That Beats Everything Else Right Now

If you can only retain one piece of advice from this article, make it this one.

The single most employable cloud credential combination in 2026 — for both the US and Indian markets — is:

AWS Solutions Architect – Associate + Azure Administrator Associate (AZ-104)

Here is why. The majority of mid-to-large companies run workloads across both platforms. They want engineers who can operate in either environment without requiring separate specialists for each cloud. A candidate with both of these certs, plus a portfolio of real projects, is genuinely rare. The supply-demand gap at that intersection is still very wide.

This is a 6–9 month commitment if you do it properly. It costs approximately $315 in exam fees. It is worth it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which cloud certification pays the most? At the professional level, GCP Professional Data Engineer and Professional Cloud Architect consistently rank highest — often $190K–$207K in US roles. But these salaries reflect 5+ years of experience in data or architecture roles, not just the certification. For someone starting a cloud career, associate-level AWS or Azure certs are more immediately actionable.

Is AZ-900 worth doing before AZ-104? Only if your company requires it as a prerequisite for internal certification reimbursement, or if you genuinely have zero cloud knowledge. If you have any IT background, go directly to AZ-104. AZ-900 will not help you get hired — AZ-104 will.

Can I switch cloud platforms mid-career? Yes, and it is more common than people think. Core concepts — networking, storage, compute, identity, security — are transferable across all three platforms. Most experienced AWS professionals can learn enough Azure for the AZ-104 in 6–8 weeks of focused study. The mental model carries over; you are just learning a new vocabulary.

What is the hardest certification across all three platforms? AWS Solutions Architect – Professional (SAP-C02) and AWS DevOps Engineer – Professional (DOP-C02) are widely considered among the most difficult IT exams available. The GCP Professional Cloud Architect is also highly challenging. These are not exams you pass by memorising answers — they require genuine architectural thinking under time pressure.

Which cert is best for Indian freshers in 2026? AWS Cloud Practitioner as a starting badge, followed immediately by either AZ-104 or AWS Solutions Architect – Associate depending on your target company type. Check Naukri.com and LinkedIn Jobs for cloud roles in your city and count how often each cert appears. That local job board data is more reliable than any generalised comparison article — including this one.

The Bottom Line

Three platforms. Three genuinely different careers.

AWS gives you the widest job market and the most beginner resources. Azure gives you enterprise access and the lowest ongoing renewal costs. GCP gives you the highest ceiling — if you are willing to specialise deeply in data and AI to reach it.

Pick one. Study hard. Build real projects. Then add the second cert.

The cloud job market is not going to wait.
